This conceptual plan, designed by CRG Architects, envisions a shipping container skyscraper in Mumbai aimed at providing temporary housing. The project earned third place in a competition focused on innovative urban solutions for Mumbai, India. If realized, the building would be supported by concrete structures and offer a variety of living options, ranging from single-person apartments to three-bedroom residences.
Named “Container Skyscrapers,” this ambitious project is proposed for the densely populated Dharavi slums. It plans to stack 2,500 shipping containers to house approximately 5,000 residents, creating a towering structure reaching 400 meters in height.

The irregular shape of the site provides the design team with significant freedom to optimize the building’s form and minimize potential drawbacks. They plan to elevate the entire site by 100 meters and connect it to the tallest building on the site.
The project includes two towers, whose placement is dictated by the site’s unique shape. To maximize views, the base of the towers is designed in a cylindrical form, taking full advantage of the surrounding panoramic vistas. Moving upward, the towers gradually shift from their cylindrical base, adapting to the surrounding features and planned street layouts, which further refine the building’s shape.
