The Pine Island Cottage is nestled on a secluded island at the heart of Georgia Bay, Ontario, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings. Designed by Bureau Tempo and Thom Fougere Studio, this serene family retreat features a series of staggered gathering spaces that follow the island’s sloping rocky terrain.
The interior design reflects the rich textures of nature, evoking simplicity and tranquility. It’s akin to sitting on rugged stones, feeling the sudden touch of raindrops—a natural “tension” that effortlessly dissolves outdoors, allowing an intimate connection with the environment.
At the core of the home lies the central living area, which includes the kitchen, dining room, living room centered around a stone fireplace, and an outdoor porch—four distinct spaces crafted to encourage family togetherness. The sleeping quarters are positioned higher on the island, providing a peaceful retreat.

Entrance and Living Area: A Gradual Unfolding of Space
Visitors enter through oak doors featuring cobblestone-shaped handles, immediately greeted by a low, softly illuminated entrance framed with oak. As the stepped floor gently descends, the ceiling height increases, and lighter tones fill the space, gradually expanding until the main living area reveals itself.

Kitchen: The Heartbeat of the Home
The kitchen serves as the home’s vibrant core, featuring a food storage room, bar counter, and a cozy breakfast nook. Its central stone island evokes the relaxed atmosphere of a rocky island shoreline gathering. Custom cabinetry crafted from white oak, walnut, and limestone complements the space, where every detail—from ceramic dishware and cookware to linens—has been thoughtfully selected.

Living Area: Multifunctional and Inviting
The food storage room has been transformed into a market-style space showcasing fresh produce and ingredients. Trays within the storage facilitate easy transport of items like coffee and cocktails to the adjacent tin bar. On one side, a custom walnut sofa and integrated staircase create a cozy seating zone, while the opposite side features a stone fireplace. This fireplace serves as a tranquil hub for gatherings, offering warmth indoors and extending its comfort to the outdoor porch through double-sided flames and screened windows.

Bedroom Area: A Unique Journey Through Materials
The bedroom zone connects to the main living space via a glass-enclosed elevated corridor. One side houses guest rooms and children’s quarters with bunk beds; the other side features private offices and master suites. Material transitions—from concrete to wood, then to locally sourced Eramosa stone—offer a distinctive tactile and visual experience as you move through the cabin. The stone flooring has been fire-treated to achieve a weathered, aged look, enhancing the sense of touch underfoot.
