During the COVID-19 pandemic, the owner purchased this multi-family house without ever entering the building. While the structure appeared worn and neglected, its exterior still held a certain charm. The homeowner envisioned transforming the house into a perfect residence tailored to their personal taste through a thorough renovation.

The building enjoys an excellent location, facing southeast toward a city garden with views of a church, a pedestrian park, and two majestic old oak trees. Importantly, there is no concern about disturbances from neighbors behind the property.

The original two aging apartments were converted into a single independent residential unit, with an additional floor added during renovation. This change not only harmonizes the building with the surrounding streetscape but also allows for optimizing every space to suit long-term residential living.

Initially, the design aimed to preserve the main load-bearing structure. However, this plan was quickly revised to a full renovation, retaining only the front facade and partition walls. Thoughtful design ensures maximum natural light penetrates this narrow row house.

The residence measures 4.75 meters in width and 16 meters in depth. The central area tends to be quite dark, so special attention was given to this space. The vertical circulation has been relocated to the center, creating a skylight well. Additional skylights were installed, along with large windows at the front and rear, ensuring the entire home benefits from abundant natural light.

At the project’s outset, the design focused on the homeowner’s preferences for colors and natural materials. Carefully chosen intervention points, finishes, and construction methods laid the groundwork for the renovation. Extensive self-construction allowed the owners to invest in the home’s technology, energy efficiency, and aesthetics, creating a sustainable living environment.
