Before exporting a Revit model, it is essential to control the model geometry to enhance the export process’s performance. In Revit, a building model view contains numerous objects and a vast amount of data. When exporting a model for use in other software, Revit only exports objects visible in one or more views.
By reducing the number of exported geometries and their underlying data, you can achieve the following benefits:
- Improve export process performance.
- Reduce the size of exported files.
- Enhance the performance of importing applications.
- Eliminate unnecessary parts in the exported file, minimizing the workload to remove these objects in the target application.
Here are some effective methods to reduce the number of geometric shapes being exported:
Turn Off Graphic Visibility
This approach decreases the number of objects and data exported from Revit, leading to better performance during import into other applications.
To turn off graphic visibility in a view:
Click the View tab
Graphics panel
(Visibility/Graphics).
Turn off the visibility of specific element categories as needed. For example, you might want to exclude terrain in a 3D view you plan to export. Similarly, if rendering an exterior scene, disable elements inside the building.
Use a Section Box or Cropped Area
To export only a particular part of the model, utilize section boxes in 3D views or crop regions in 2D views. Elements entirely outside these defined areas will be excluded from the export.
This method is especially useful for large models. For instance, if you want to export the interior of a conference room within an office building, apply a section box to isolate the conference room in a 3D view, excluding the rest of the building.
Specify the Level of Detail
Adjusting the level of detail for a view can significantly improve the performance of importing applications.
To set the detail level, click the Detail Level button on the view control bar at the bottom of the drawing area and select one of the options: Coarse, Medium, or Fine.
Choosing Coarse or Medium reduces the number of details displayed in Revit views, which decreases the number of exported objects and results in smaller exported file sizes.
