BIM (Building Information Modeling) is currently a widely promoted and essential skill in the construction industry. So, what are the most commonly used software tools for learning BIM? The BIM Building Network editor has compiled a list of popular software used for modeling, structural analysis, and operation & maintenance.
Core BIM Modeling Software
1. Autodesk’s Revit series, including Architecture, Structure, and MEP modules.
2. Bentley’s suite for architecture, structure, and equipment. Bentley products hold undeniable advantages in factory design (such as petroleum, chemical, power, pharmaceutical industries) and infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, municipal works, and water conservancy.
3. After Nemetschek acquired Graphisoft in 2007, three key products—ArchiCAD, AllPLAN, and VectorWorks—have been grouped under one umbrella. Among these, ArchiCAD is the most familiar globally and is recognized as one of the earliest BIM core modeling software with significant market influence. However, in China, its specialized functions (mainly focused on architecture) do not fully align with the multidisciplinary design institute system, which limits its business growth. AllPLAN is primarily marketed in German-speaking countries, while VectorWorks is mainly used in the US market.
4. Dassault’s CATIA is the world’s leading high-end mechanical design and manufacturing software, dominating sectors like aviation, aerospace, and automotive. When applied to the construction industry, it offers remarkable modeling, visualization, and information management capabilities for complex shapes and large-scale buildings compared to traditional construction software. However, its integration with the specific needs and workforce of the construction industry is limited. Digital Project, developed by Gery Technology, is a secondary development software based on CATIA designed specifically for construction engineering.
Summary: These four software suites are the primary BIM modeling tools currently available, with Revit being the most widely used. They are suitable for both design and construction professionals to learn.
BIM Structural Analysis Software
International options: ETABS, STAAD, Robot;
Domestic option: PKPM.
Summary: PKPM is considered the mainstream structural design software in China and is widely used by structural engineers. Its integration with BIM greatly facilitates structural design workflows. These software are recommended for structural designers to master.
BIM Visualization Software
Popular visualization tools include 3DS Max, Artlantis, AccuRender, and Lightscape.
Summary: These are suitable for both design and construction personnel, but their popularity has decreased unless specifically required by employers. It is generally recommended to focus on the major BIM software suites with broader application.
BIM Model Comprehensive Clash Detection Software
Common clash detection tools include Guanglianda BIM Audit Software, Luban Software, Autodesk Navisworks, Bentley ProjectWise Navigator, and Solibri Model Checker.
Summary: Widely used for model inspection, these tools are valuable for engineering cost estimators, designers, and construction personnel alike.
BIM Cost Management Software
Internationally, Innovaya and Solibri are popular for BIM cost management.
In China, Luban Software and Guanglianda Software are leading representatives in this category.
Summary: Cost management professionals who want to learn BIM are encouraged to start with these two domestic software options.
BIM Operation Software
ArchiBUS, a US-based operations management software, is widely used in China for facilities management. It integrates with Revit BIM models for smooth data exchange. The software focuses on full lifecycle management of enterprise facilities, with spatial management as a key feature, allowing organizations to visualize and optimize space usage, reducing costs.
Summary: This full lifecycle management software is ideal for engineering and facilities management personnel to learn.
BIM Scheme Design Software
Currently, the main BIM scheme design tools are Onuma Planning System and Affinity.
Summary: These software have fewer users at present, making them more suitable for architectural designers interested in BIM scheme design.
