The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States has selected PAU Studio, a New York-based architecture and urban planning firm, to design the nation’s newest air traffic control tower. This new tower will replace the iconic mid-20th-century design by I.M. Pei with a highly adaptable and sustainable prototype that blends modern form and function. The design aims to meet the evolving needs of the 21st century with an architectural solution that is both innovative and practical.

This new tower plays a key role in U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector by 2050. The updated design incorporates advances in aviation technology, safety improvements, and adaptability to changing environmental and climatic conditions.

The new air traffic control towers will feature a standardized yet customizable design, allowing for different materials and colors that reflect the unique regional characteristics of each location while meeting essential functional requirements. The first 30 towers are planned to be constructed in cities ranging from Detroit, Michigan to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and from Louisville, Kentucky to Key West, Florida, with construction expected to begin as early as 2024. PAU Studio plans to integrate geothermal heating and cooling systems, maximizing the use of clean, renewable energy.

The structural prototype incorporates a wide range of sustainable features. These include the use of recycled steel and metal products, low-carbon building materials, efficient water-saving devices, precise energy monitoring systems, and high-performance exterior walls designed to minimize thermal bridging. The building systems will be fully electric, further reducing the environmental footprint. Additionally, the modular design allows much of the construction to occur in workshops rather than on-site, significantly lowering the carbon impact and streamlining the building process.

These new towers will enable smaller airports to manage increased flight operations more sustainably and cost-effectively. “I look forward to seeing this design move from the drawing board to construction sites nationwide,” said US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. “These towers will help airports accommodate more passengers, boost local economies, and prepare us for a future of low-carbon aviation.”

In recent years, many countries have been advancing toward more sustainable and comprehensive infrastructure and transportation hubs. For example, last month Foster + Partners and Arup were selected to design a new station for California’s High-Speed Rail in the Central Valley. These stations will serve as carbon-free templates for other stops along the 500-mile route from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

In 2022, JAJA Architects won a competition in Denmark focused on developing resource-efficient and climate-friendly subway stations, employing material-optimized designs to create sustainable transit hubs. Similarly, in Madrid, UNStudio and b720 Arquitectos were chosen to lead a comprehensive renovation plan for the Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor station and its surrounding urban areas.
