Implementing BIM Technology in the Construction of Chengdu Metro Line 10 Post Stations

Recent developments have been made on Metro Line 10, which connects Chengdu’s central urban area to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. On June 2nd, Chengdu Metro Company announced that the construction phase of the first section of Line 10 has entered the station phase, laying the groundwork for its planned opening and operation in 2017. To ensure high-quality and efficient construction, Line 10 will introduce a safety experience zone and implement comprehensive BIM 3D modeling throughout the entire process—marking a first in Chengdu Metro’s construction projects.

The post-station engineering work encompasses a wide range of tasks, including decoration and renovation, conventional electromechanical systems, power supply, low-voltage systems, gas fire extinguishing, escalators, platform screen doors, and track installation. These components are complex and varied, as explained by a representative from Chengdu Metro Company. The pipelines within each subway station intersect vertically and horizontally, involving over 30 categories that cover more than 10 specialties, with a total length of approximately 10,000 meters.

To guarantee safe, high-quality, efficient, and well-organized progress in the post-station engineering, a detailed 3D model covering all aspects and stages of the construction has been developed for the six stations in Phase I of Line 10. This model helps construction teams accurately understand the positioning and elevation of various mechanical and electrical pipelines. Additionally, a safety experience area has been established on-site to simulate potential safety hazards. This immersive setup allows workers to experience the risks associated with unsafe operating behaviors firsthand and to master proper safety procedures and emergency responses.

Overview of Chengdu Metro Line 10

Line 10 spans approximately 10.9 kilometers, entirely underground, comprising six stations: Taipingyuan, Cujin, Huaxing, Jinhua, Airport Station 1, and Airport Station 2. The line begins at Taipingyuan Station, which serves as a transfer hub connecting Metro Lines 3 and 7. It runs along Jialing Road, crossing the West Ring Road and the Third Ring Expressway, then heads south to Shuangshuang Avenue, linking to the Bayi Furniture City commercial district at Cujin Station. Huaxing Station is located at the intersection of Xin’an Avenue and Wuhou Avenue.

Continuing south along the planned route, the line passes the Ring Expressway to reach Maxin Road, where Jinhua Station is situated at the intersection with Jinhang Road. The route then follows Maxin Road, crossing the Jiang’an River to enter Terminal 1, where Airport Station 1 is located. The final stop, Airport Station 2, is positioned at Terminal 2 within the reserved space inside the terminal building.

Once completed, this metro line will allow passengers to travel directly from Chengdu’s city center to Shuangliu International Airport, enabling seamless “zero-distance” transfers between air travel and subway transportation.
