Situated in a remote area of Ubud, Bali, the building is surrounded by lush forests and rolling terrain. Designing a structure that harmoniously blends with such natural surroundings presents a significant challenge. The design process began by preserving existing features like the land’s contours and indigenous trees, fostering a deep connection between the building’s occupants and nature.

The design features a polygonal form with curved surfaces that integrate seamlessly with the terrain while preserving the space occupied by existing trees. This approach simplifies construction for traditional Balinese craftsmen. The curved polygons, clad in “Sirap” (ironwood), naturally blend into the environment. Scattered supporting columns across the site symbolize trees, extending this natural motif into the building’s interior layout.

By avoiding existing trees and adapting to the land’s horizontal contours, the design creates a unique spatial experience that fosters a strong connection between people, space, and nature. The roof and railing patterns trace the earth’s streamlined contours, forming a dynamic and distinctive design. The roof, also covered with “Sirap” (ironwood), provides both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Within this secluded natural setting, the main staircase serves as a central link connecting various groups within the building.

This wall-free building allows its occupants to experience natural elements directly — from temperature shifts and breezes to humidity, the scent of rain, natural light, and shifting shadows. Surrounded by verdant trees and equipped without walls or air conditioning, it maximizes natural light and temperature control. This design strategy significantly reduces energy consumption by minimizing the need for artificial lighting and cooling.
