Montage Hannam is a film studio and the headquarters of a commercial production company, situated in the residential area of Hannam, Seoul. The building consists of four floors above ground and two underground levels, designed to stack various scenes resembling movie sets vertically within a single structure.
Typically, building design is based on human scale, with circulation spaces planned around user needs and movement paths. Floor heights correspond proportionally to human height, and window placement and size align with the average eye level. However, at Montage Hannam, the human scale is secondary to the ‘camera.’ The entire spatial flow—from the street to the main entrance, through each floor—is organized around the camera’s perspective.
The interplay of natural light, spatial depth, and material transformations within camera frames shapes the narrative of this project. Various spatial elements—such as differing ceiling heights, oversized windows, and interior spaces extending outward—combine to create a distinctive advertising set, evoking a dreamlike atmosphere.
The suspended concave volume, shaped to fit the site, casts shifting shadows as the sun moves, adding a sculptural weight to the building’s form. Access to the first floor is gained via steps beneath this volume, leading to a dynamic three-dimensional space where users can enter the lower backyard from inside.
Montage Hannam functions not only as a photography studio but also as a filming backdrop, office space, parking facility, and café. This versatile space is both a stage for film production and a daily environment that serves multiple purposes. It is a collection of diverse scenes, allowing users to experience a continuous interplay of surreal and everyday moments.
