The fundamental prerequisite for implementing BIM technology is the selection and effective use of BIM software. While BIM technology itself is broader than just operating software, its practical application relies heavily on proficient software use. Therefore, choosing the right BIM structural software is critical. When selecting BIM software for structural engineering, the following factors should be considered:

1. Identify which BIM software is widely used both domestically and internationally within the architectural design industry, and determine which are most suitable for building structural applications.
2. Evaluate the core features of the shortlisted BIM structural software, including software localization, domestic market penetration, data exchange capabilities, support for secondary development and scalability, as well as cost-effectiveness.
3. Consider the company’s financial situation, the types and scales of primary architectural projects, and the enterprise’s overall development strategy. Assess the software’s purchase cost and expected return on investment accordingly.
4. Organize BIM software training sessions for the structural BIM team members in advance to evaluate their proficiency with the software. Taking all these factors into account, decide whether the software can bring tangible benefits to the company’s design operations at the current stage or generate greater economic gains over the planned development period.
Additional important notes:
• If the project owner specifies BIM software requirements for the structural discipline or has particular demands regarding BIM design deliverables (which influence the software’s output format), these requirements must take priority.
• If a software change is necessary, provide detailed analysis or supporting data to communicate and negotiate with the project owner. Ultimately, the owner’s decision is final.
• If the owner has no specific preferences, collaborate with the project BIM manager to study and select the most appropriate structural BIM software. Preference should be given to software that uses the same data format as other disciplines. If this is not feasible, prioritize software with strong capabilities for data exchange between various disciplines.
