Abstract: The construction of the Xinjiang Karamay Evian Computing Industrial Park is set to begin soon. Utilizing BIM technology, the design firm Atkins has created a modular building that complies with China’s green building standards. This project will become the first green building pilot in Karamay.
Recently, it was announced that construction of the Xinjiang Karamay Evian Computing Industrial Park will commence shortly. Designed by Atkins, the industrial park spans nearly 50,000 square meters and will offer office space for several software companies.
The design team emphasized that the building’s primary goal is to foster a creative industry environment by providing shared facilities and social spaces suitable for innovation and collaboration.
Karamay experiences extreme local temperatures, ranging from lows of -30°C in winter to highs of 42°C in summer. To address this, the modular buildings will be prefabricated in factories and then assembled onsite in sequence, minimizing weather-related construction challenges.
Steven Smit, Architectural Design Director at Atkins Shanghai, stated, “Our challenge is to design a modern cloud computing industrial park for Karamay that encourages collaboration and attracts new industries. The innovative ‘binary’ planning and flexible modular system simplify future expansion for our clients.” Atkins’ scope includes architectural design, landscape design, and sustainable development consulting, showcasing their strength as a multidisciplinary consultancy.
Leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM), Atkins designed the modular building in line with China’s green building standards. This project will serve as Karamay’s first green building pilot, making future expansions easier and more cost-effective.
Karamay is a major oil production center in China, with its oil industry driving the highest per capita GDP in the country. However, after more than 50 years of development, the city is pursuing industrial diversification to reduce reliance on oil. Since 2011, Atkins has supported Karamay’s urban transformation by promoting strategies such as circular economy development and emerging sectors including cloud computing, engineering services, automotive services, and tourism.
Atkins has become a key master planner for the Karamay Municipal Government, providing planning and design services for the city’s new transportation hub, central business district, automotive city, and surrounding parks, lakes, and bridges.
Construction of this cloud computing industry park is scheduled to begin on June 15, 2014, with completion expected in 2015.
