The 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games Esports Center has recently been established within the Beijingyuan Ecological Park in Hangzhou. Situated in Xiacheng District, this venue is the first in China to fully meet the official esports competition standards for the Asian Games. It is designed to enhance the esports experience across competition, training, and entertainment, supporting the broader functions of Hangzhou Esports Digital Entertainment Town.

△ Site location schematic
The site is bordered on three sides by urban roads, high-speed rail lines, and elevated expressways, resulting in highly complex surrounding traffic. To address this, the esports arena is designed with a sunken structure. This allows pedestrian and vehicle traffic to flow underground into the venue in a multi-dimensional way, effectively overcoming the challenges posed by the intricate traffic around the site.

The building’s form is shaped by unique external site factors, guiding the architectural logic from the exterior inward. The design concept, inspired by an “interstellar vortex,” extends the three main pedestrian pathways surrounding the site as the framework of this vortex. These paths rotate and ascend around the core, shaping the main structure. Resembling stars within a cosmic nebula, the design projects light and energy into interstellar space.

The building’s exterior features a combination of self-cleaning anodized aluminum panels and transparent LED glass curtain walls. This design seamlessly incorporates multimedia technologies such as LED dynamic screens, 3D holographic imaging, and large electronic interactive devices, integrating them into both the indoor and outdoor spaces of the arena.

According to the designer, “This project showcases the immense potential for collaboration between design, technology, and architecture. This synergy is especially significant given the current urban environmental challenges and the urgent need for sustainable ecological solutions.”
