China Zun Tower in Beijing Surpasses 150 Meters: Foundation Pit Construction Animated

On December 24, 2015, the Supervision Bureau of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development announced significant progress on Beijing’s tallest building. The China Zun project, with a total height of 528 meters, had successfully surpassed the 150-meter mark during construction.

The China Zun Project is a major engineering endeavor in Beijing, overseen by the Municipal Supervision Bureau to ensure quality standards. Located on the Z15 plot in the core area of the CBD in Chaoyang District, the project covers 11,478 square meters, with a total construction area of 437,000 square meters. The building will feature 108 floors above ground and 7 underground levels, reaching a total height of 528 meters. Upon completion, it will stand as the tallest landmark in Beijing.

Situated in the Z15 plot within Beijing’s CBD core area, China Zun is a super high-rise structure that, once finished, will be the tallest building in the city.

On the west side, China Zun faces the current tallest building in Beijing, Guomao Phase III, which also has a height of 528 meters. China Zun is planned to serve as the future headquarters for CITIC Group. Construction began on September 12, 2011, with the main structure topping out by the end of 2016. The building was completed and handed over in 2018. The total investment in the project is expected to reach 24 billion yuan, funded by Beijing CITIC Heye Co., Ltd.

The Z15 plot is the largest land parcel in the CBD core area. It extends east to Jinhe East Road, south to Jinghui Street, west to Jinhe Road, and north to a planned green space. On December 22, 2010, CITIC Group acquired this prime land for 6.3 billion yuan. The total construction area is approximately 437,000 square meters, with 108 floors above ground, 7 pure basement levels, and an additional 5 underground floors in the tower area. Once completed, China Zun will surpass Guomao Phase III as Beijing’s tallest building.

The foundation pit measures roughly 140 meters east to west and 80 meters north to south, covering an area of 11,478 square meters. The tower features a core tube giant frame with an extended arm conversion truss structure. Its foundation employs a pile raft plate combined with an anchor rod system. This design makes China Zun one of the world’s tallest super high-rise buildings with outstanding seismic performance, exceeding 500 meters in height. Throughout construction, advanced BIM technology was applied extensively, replacing manual pre-assembly with computer-aided processes to minimize rework and errors.

On June 8, 2014, the results of the “Top Ten Contemporary Buildings in China” selection were announced, and China Zun was honored with the prestigious title of one of the top ten contemporary buildings in the country.
