Origins of the “Big Health” Concept
The project park, established in the 1950s and located on Sanjianfang East Road in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, was founded by the esteemed Chinese microbiologist Tang Feifan, the first director of the Beijing Institute of Biological Products. Its roots trace back to the Central Epidemic Prevention Department of the Beiyang Government, founded in 1919. This site is the birthplace of Chinese biological products, boasting a history that spans over a century.

Our design strives to bridge the enterprise’s century-old heritage with its mission to “care for life and health.” We aim to create a forward-looking, “healthy and ecological” industrial park that integrates medical services with leisure, forming a comprehensive “big health” service hub.

Defining the China Biological Headquarters Office Park
On the east side of the site, we have planned the “Healthy China Headquarters R&D Base,” which will serve as the catalyst for the Healthy China Experience Zone, Healthy China Science and Technology Innovation Zone, Healthy China Medical Service Zone, and Healthy China Smart Community. Together, these zones will shape a thriving industrial cluster dedicated to the big health sector.

From Industrial Factories to Garden Offices: The Transformation
This project confronts two primary challenges. First, the park’s existing buildings are 1990s-era factory structures used for biological research laboratories. They suffer from poor lighting, insufficient for modern scientific and office needs. Second, the exterior design is outdated and no longer represents the corporate image befitting the new era.

Renovation Strategy One:
Integrate the “new” and the “old” by thoughtfully updating the buildings’ exteriors.
“New” represents a modern image with vibrant colors highlighting cutting-edge technology;
“Old” preserves the raw textures that evoke a century of cultural heritage.

The facade reflects the call of the new era.

Renovation Strategy Two:
Introduce skylights on the rooftops to increase natural light and improve air circulation indoors. The sunny atrium is enhanced by incorporating green landscaping, combining water features and plants to regulate the indoor microclimate effectively. Together, sunlight, fresh air, water, and greenery breathe new life into the once dark and dull factory buildings.

Sunlight fills the courtyard, while greenery brings vitality.

Water symbolizes the source of life. The design recreates various forms of water—falling, gushing, dripping, and mist—to craft a dynamic spatial atmosphere reminiscent of mountains and rivers. The green vitality represents everlasting life.

Indoors, the simple and refreshing color palette creates a pure yet vibrant atmosphere. The thoughtfully designed pantry, phone room, and leisure areas highlight the human-centered care embedded in this tech office.
Color rhythms invigorate the space.

The vibrant orange corridor bridge “narrows” the distance between buildings and people, fostering efficient connectivity and enhancing interaction within the enterprise.

A Century of Stories Told Through the Park
The facades of the old buildings serve as a canvas to recount significant historical milestones from the past hundred years. From the establishment of the Central Epidemic Prevention Office in 1919, to the isolation of the first penicillin strain in 1942, the eradication of smallpox in the early 1960s, the founding of the National Engineering Research Center for New Vaccines in 2005, the WHO pre-certification of the live Japanese Encephalitis vaccine in 2013, and the development of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2020—these pivotal moments have shaped humanity’s fate. They evoke pride and admiration for this remarkable legacy.
