BIM Q&A: How to Adjust Beam Elevations in Revit

BIM Q&A | How to Adjust the Elevation of Revit Beams

When working with structural beams in Revit, you may need to adjust their reference elevations. However, you may notice that the beam’s reference elevation and work plane are often grayed out and cannot be modified directly.

In this BIM tutorial, we will explore three effective methods to change the reference elevation of structural beams using Revit software.

Method 1: Select the beam and set the starting and ending point offsets in the beam’s properties to a value such as 1. This action will enable you to choose a different reference elevation from other floor levels. After making the adjustment, remember to reset the offset values back to zero.

Method 2: Use the Edit Work Plane function available in the modify command after selecting the beam. This allows you to directly adjust the beam’s positioning and reference elevation.

Method 3: Select the beam you want to modify, cut it, and then paste it onto the desired floor level. This effectively changes the beam’s elevation to match the new floor.
