Reasons and Solutions for Revit Failing to Cut or Connect Geometric Shapes
When attempting to cut or connect geometric shapes in Revit, you might encounter warnings, and the shapes may fail to regenerate correctly.
Common warning messages include:
- Unable to cut an instance of __AI_T_SC_0_ from outside the wall.
- Cannot cut entities with instances.
- The roof cannot be cut.
- Cannot cut connected elements.
- Unable to keep elements connected.
Issue: Revit is designed to create accurate building models based on a specific scale. The software has built-in assumptions regarding the scale and precision necessary to generate practical building models.
On the large scale, there is a limitation: the graphic must fit within 20 cubic miles.
On the smaller scale, cutting geometric shapes requires precise alignment of faces and edges. Even slight misalignments can invalidate the geometry, causing the cutting operation to fail.
Another critical small-scale requirement is that geometric shapes must not be smaller than approximately 1/32 inch (0.79 mm). This means that edges, widths, and radii must meet or exceed this minimum size. When cutting, the resulting geometry must comply with this threshold; otherwise, it is deemed invalid. While two independent geometric shapes can be valid, cutting one shape from another may produce edges or volumes below the minimum size, resulting in failure.
For example, the image below illustrates a scenario where cutting results in shapes smaller than the 1/32 inch requirement, causing errors.
Solution: To resolve these errors, adjust the size or position of graphic elements. Possible approaches include:
- Move the connecting or cutting elements to ensure the resulting geometry is larger than 1/32 inch.
- Identify combinations of elements that cause minor inaccuracies, which may arise from factors such as:
- Small rounded corners or chamfers on some shapes.
- Slight misalignment in cylinders or rotational surfaces between parts.
- Subtle slopes on surfaces like roofs or floors that intersect closely with other geometry.
