A Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Linking Feature in Navisworks

How to Use the Linking Feature in Navisworks

First, open your Navisworks scene file and switch to the 7F Construction View, where the saved viewpoint is located. The current viewpoint position will be indicated by a red circle, as shown below:

Next, we will attach photos of the construction site and relevant company website information to the structural columns within the scene. To enhance the visual quality, go to the Viewpoint tab and click on the rendering style panel to switch the mode to Rendering. This will improve the scene’s appearance, as illustrated below:

Navisworks offers powerful linking tools that allow you to connect external data to your current scene. To begin, ensure that the selection accuracy in the Selection and Search panel is set to Highest Level Object. Then, select a structural column and switch to the Project Tools tab to access the Links panel. Here, you can manage your links using three options: Add Link, Edit Link, and Reset Link, enabling you to embed additional data into the selected element. See the example below:

For instance, when you use the Add Link tool, an Add Link dialog box will appear. Name the link Construction Site Photo and specify the file or external URL you want to link. Clicking Browse will open the file selection dialog. Make sure to select an image file format, locate the desired construction photo on your computer, and click OK. This associates the photo with the link. Then, set the category to Label, assign the link to any position on the structural column within the scene, and click OK. This process adds a label to the column, as shown here:

Next, to add a description of the construction company for the column, follow the same procedure. Use Add Link again, name it Construction Unit Information, and replace the file path with the URL of the Leg Teaching Website. Set the category to Hyperlink and attach this information to the structural column. This way, multiple external data links are integrated into the structural column, as demonstrated below:

Now, when you click on the links displayed in the commonly used tab panel, the scene will show the linked information. Clicking on the construction site photo link will open the photo within the scene, while clicking on the URL will launch your browser and direct you to the website. See the example here:

Navisworks effectively integrates construction site data through linking, enabling unified and streamlined construction site management.
