Effective Use of Shortcut Keys in Revit
In Revit, some shortcut keys lack detailed descriptions, yet mastering their functions can significantly boost your modeling efficiency. Below is a list of practical shortcut keys to help you work smarter.
1. Purpose of Shortcut Keys
The spacebar in Revit is primarily used to flip elements. For example, when you draw a door as shown in the image, pressing the spacebar flips the door leaf’s orientation.
2. Additional Uses of the Spacebar
The spacebar can also change the orthogonal axis of graphic elements. In the room illustrated, you need to create a table parallel to the wall.
By default, Revit creates elements aligned with the drawing surface. While using rotation or alignment tools can achieve this, these methods often involve multiple steps and reduce efficiency.
This example demonstrates a simpler approach:
When creating an element, press the spacebar to align the table with a nearby reference line—such as walls, grid lines, or other graphic lines. Then, move the element to the desired location to complete the placement.
3. Function of the Shift Key
Holding the Shift key toggles between orthogonal drawing modes. For instance, when copying a grid (as shown in the figure), the “Constraint” option is enabled to maintain orthogonal mode. Press and hold Shift to switch between orthogonal and non-orthogonal modes.
4. Function of the Tab Key
The Tab key helps you cycle through selection targets.
For example, when creating a floor slab over an imported CAD file containing many polylines, manually selecting each line is time-consuming. Instead, hover over the line and press Tab to toggle through selection options until the red box highlights “Wall” or “Wall Chain.” Then, left-click to select all edges at once.
Why Use Shortcut Keys?
Incorporating shortcut keys into your workflow can greatly enhance modeling speed, saving both time and costs.
