Applying Filters and Selecting Filtering Conditions in Revit
When modeling mechanical and electrical systems in Revit, you often deal with numerous types of complex pipelines. Using filters is essential to hide or differentiate various pipeline categories effectively.
Since filtering conditions vary across different systems, we will explore them separately for water pipes, cable trays, and air ducts.
1. Example: Sprinkler Pipes
Press the shortcut key VV to open the Visibility/Graphics Override panel, then navigate to the Filters tab.
Click the Edit/Create button and then select Create.
Rename the filter to J-spray pipe, click OK, and select it from the filter list. Make sure to enable Show all and Hide unselected categories as needed.
Set the filter condition by choosing System Type equal to J-spray pipe.
Click OK to apply the filter. If you want to exclude sprinkler pipes with diameters less than 50mm, create an additional filter with those settings. The filter configuration is shown in the image below.
The images below illustrate the visual difference before and after applying the filter to sprinkler pipes smaller than 50mm.
During the water supply and drainage system modeling, equipment placement is often necessary. However, sometimes filters must be applied to hide certain elements to avoid interference with other disciplines’ equipment.
You can also customize the color of water tanks by adjusting the filter’s fill patterns, as demonstrated in the figure below.
2. Example: Cable Trays
The filter settings for cable trays are shown in the image below.
3. Example: Exhaust Systems
For duct systems, filters are also based on the system type.
Why Use Filters?
In complex models with numerous pipelines and equipment, filters allow you to temporarily hide elements and clearly differentiate categories. For instance, cable trays can be color-coded through filters to enhance visual distinction.
