During the 2015 Spring Festival, Guangxi Construction Group’s Fifth Construction successfully took over the Zhuhai Port Section II Project of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (hereinafter referred to as the Zhuhai Port Project), which has been hailed by the industry as a “Super Engineering” feat. To enhance project construction management, Guangxi Construction Fifth Construction actively adopted BIM technology, achieving remarkable results.
The Zhuhai Port project consists of one underground floor and four above-ground floors, covering a total construction area of 208,796.59 square meters, with a bid price of 961.2 million yuan. It is located on the north side of the artificial island of the Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in the Gongbei Bay area of Zhuhai, facing the Macau Peninsula across the water. Once completed, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will become the world’s longest cross-sea bridge. As the longest, most expensive, and most challenging cross-sea bridge project in China’s construction history, it is recognized as a world-class super project.
To ensure the effective application of BIM technology on the Zhuhai Port project, Guangxi Construction Fifth Construction’s North-South Branch took the initiative to establish the company’s first BIM workstation. They selected a team with an average age of only 25 to join the project. These young employees brought energy and bold innovation, overcoming challenges such as incomplete site facilities and the hot, humid marine climate during the early stages. They worked overtime conducting research and development, significantly improving the technical team’s modeling capabilities.
Throughout the construction process, the BIM team showcased their expertise and achieved promising results. By refining the modeling, they were able to accurately identify drawing errors twice, laying a solid foundation for problem-solving later on. Regarding pipeline integration, the team combined complex pipelines from various specialties with the BIM models of building structures to detect design conflicts. This comprehensive pipeline layout deepening reduced the time required by two-thirds and achieved a 100% collision-free result. Additionally, pipeline usage was reduced by over 10%, significantly cutting labor and material costs.
The BIM modeling and construction quality of the Zhuhai Port project have surpassed those of other local construction units, earning unanimous praise from leaders and owners at all levels in Zhuhai during various observation and exchange activities.
Currently, the project is progressing at full speed, having completed the basement roof construction of the transportation center. In just 190 days, a total area of 120,000 square meters has been finished, establishing a solid foundation for topping out the main structure before December 25th this year.
