The Admiralty Station expansion project in Hong Kong is part of the eastern section of the South Island Line, marking the city’s first four-line subway interchange. The continuous underground excavation and construction pose significant risks. Additionally, the project is situated close to the existing Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line, and the operational Admiralty Station. This area is densely populated, with many underground structures located in close proximity. One of the project’s key highlights is its application of Building Information Modeling (BIM).
“The project owner, MTR Corporation, recognizes that fully implementing BIM from construction through to operation can help maximize investment returns. Kier, Laing O’Rourke, the general contractor for the Admiralty Station expansion, along with the joint venture KLKJV—which adopted BIM technology early on—are pioneers in BIM implementation within the construction industry. For this project, the joint venture utilizes Dassault Systèmes’ 3DExperience platform as the BIM solution,” explained Syntegrate.
Syntegrate works closely with the joint venture to optimize the construction sequence—from excavation coordination and concrete pouring to frame support. By carefully planning each phase, the general contractor significantly reduces rework and prevents schedule delays throughout this highly complex undertaking.
In summary, the civil engineering design and construction industry solution offers valuable experience to address the challenges faced by large-scale infrastructure project managers:
Reduce waste and rework: Unlike traditional design and construction methods, conceptual design models can be integrated with manufacturing data, costs, quantities, specifications, and timelines. Over 75% of projects can be generated using customizable, reusable automatic templates.
Improve work efficiency: All civil engineering design data is managed on a unified platform that captures valuable knowledge from both team members and clients, making information easily accessible and usable.
Strengthen collaboration: Various tools extend across conceptual design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, and ownership teams, ensuring simultaneous, real-time access to design models and project data. This facilitates smooth completion of engineering changes.
