How to Fix the Issue When Revit Fails to Create a New Local File Upon Opening a Central File
When working on a project model using Revit’s collaborative features, it’s common to create a shared folder on a specific computer and then set up a .rvt central file. However, you might encounter a problem where others cannot create a new local file when opening the central file—the option appears grayed out, as shown below:
This issue occurs due to an incorrect save path for the central file. For example, Member A creates a new central file on their computer and saves it directly to a local folder on their machine. The save path looks like this:
When Member B tries to access the central file from their own computer, the path appears as follows:
Here, YTOR2 is the computer name of Member A. This difference in access paths is the root of the problem.
To resolve this, when Member A creates the new central file, the save location must be a network-shared folder accessible via the network path rather than a local path. For convenience, you can create a desktop shortcut pointing to the network folder.
Now, when accessing the central file from Member B’s computer, the path matches the network path where Member A saved the central file, as shown below:
With this setup, the option to create a ‘New Local File’ will be available when opening the central file.
