Which Templates Should You Use to Create MEP Families in Revit?
Families in Revit are categorized based on their family categories, which should never be chosen arbitrarily. Each object in Revit possesses specific engineering properties, and these properties are reflected in the schedules and detail tables that rely on accurate categorization. Selecting the wrong family category means the engineering properties will be incorrect, potentially preventing the family from connecting properly with MEP equipment, pipelines, and other related components. Additionally, schedule data will be inaccurate.
The family categories are predefined by the software, so users must select the category that best fits their needs. Each category comes with its own set of family parameters. Revit offers several default family templates that already include preset family categories. When creating a custom MEP family, the first step is to identify the family category your MEP object belongs to. This will guide you in choosing the appropriate family template. Table 1 provides a classification of MEP family categories along with the recommended family template files for each.
When starting a family based on conventional model family templates, the initial step in the Family Editor is to select the correct family category.
Here’s how to do it:
(1) On the ribbon, go to Create > Family Category and Parameters;
(2) In the Family Category and Parameters window, the default category is set to Conventional Model. Choose the appropriate family category from the list, as illustrated in the image below;
(3) Click the OK button to confirm your selection and complete the setup.
Only by choosing the correct family category can you ensure the family functions properly. Due to the complexity and breadth of this topic, detailed instructions on family creation will not be covered here.
