Common Challenges in Implementing BIM in Construction Projects

Although BIM has been implemented in China’s construction industry for many years and has garnered numerous international awards, it does not imply that BIM construction processes have fully matured or stabilized in the country. I would argue otherwise. Today, I want to discuss the challenges in applying BIM within construction workflows.

1. Collaborative work among interdisciplinary teams is unavoidable. Even though most industry professionals have adopted 3D visualization tools, the primary method for sharing information during collaboration still relies heavily on exchanging two-dimensional image files and documents.

2. Regardless of the BIM software package used, there is a growing demand for more detailed and sophisticated modular libraries and databases.

3. From the perspective of construction industry practitioners, the scale of BIM use and technical requirements vary. Smaller-scale users tend to prefer a more intuitive project environment with a user-friendly interface—essentially a “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” approach. Larger-scale operators, however, often accept more complex systems that offer advanced functionalities. Additionally, for large projects, the greater the customization needed, the higher the demand for flexible BIM systems.

4. For most construction professionals, 3D visualization is not an urgent requirement. Instead, an operating system capable of delivering accurate, rigorous, and comprehensive building information models is far more critical for construction companies than visualization features.

5. From a review perspective, BIM systems are expected to significantly support construction company workflows. However, the development of appropriate tools that integrate project management needs across different project stages remains a key focus for construction firms.

While many challenges exist regarding BIM application in construction and relevant BIM standards have yet to be fully established in China, overall progress is moving toward a more rational and stable direction. We can look forward to further improvements. That concludes my discussion on the challenges in applying BIM in construction processes. I hope this article has been helpful to everyone!
