How to Create Color-Filled Legends Based on Pipeline Diameter in Revit
Typically, pipelines are color-coded according to their profession and system—for example, red for fire protection systems, yellow for domestic hot water supply, and blue for air conditioning chilled water supply. This helps differentiate between various professions and systems, as illustrated below.
However, there are cases where it’s more convenient to distinguish pipelines by their diameter using color rather than by dimensioning. This method provides a quick visual check to ensure pipeline diameters are accurate, as shown in the example below.
Follow these steps to set up color-filled legends based on pipeline diameter:
(1) In the Plan View Properties window (see image), click the System Color Scheme button on the right, then select Edit to open the Color Scheme window.
(2) Next, click the Pipeline color scheme button on the right (see image) to open the Edit Color Scheme window.
(3) Choose the default pipeline color-filling scheme, or customize your own color scheme as needed.
(4) Click Confirm to apply the settings. The color effect will appear similar to highlighting the pipelines with different colored markers, as shown.
It’s important to note that you can only use one method at a time for defining colors based on pipeline diameter—either using filters or the color scheme method described here. If colors have already been assigned using filters, you must remove the filters first before using this color scheme approach.
