How to Set an Oblique Angle Reference Plane in Revit
In Revit, creating tilted components often requires setting up an inclined reference plane. The following step-by-step guide explains how to achieve this.
1. Start by selecting the Metric Conventional Model Family Template and draw a cube. Then, switch to the Reference Elevation view. Draw a diagonal reference plane and name it Vertical 45 Degrees, as shown in the image below.
2. Next, switch to the 3D view and set the visual style to Wireframe. Under the Create tab, select Set Work Plane and choose the reference plane named Vertical 45 Degrees, as illustrated.
3. On the selected work plane, draw Reference Line 1. Then, set the work plane again by picking the second plane of Reference Line 1 (use the Tab key to switch if needed), as shown in the figure.
4. Draw Reference Line 2 perpendicular to Reference Line 1. The angle can be adjusted based on your specific requirements, as demonstrated.
5. Repeat the process by selecting the second plane of Reference Line 2 as your new work plane. This will create the final inclined reference plane, as depicted in the image.
Why This Matters: When creating a family, certain components or parts may need to be placed on an inclined plane. Adjusting their rotation after placing them on a standard plane can be cumbersome. By directly setting the inclined work plane, you can quickly achieve the desired orientation, reduce repetitive adjustments, and minimize errors—ultimately improving workflow efficiency.
