Implementing BIM Technology in the Construction of Shandong University’s Qingdao Campus

On May 13th, the Qingdao Urban and Rural Development Commission announced that, with strong support from Shandong University and the Municipal Party Committee and Government, the Shandong University Qingdao Campus Museum, Library, and Sports Center Project (hereinafter referred to as the “Project”) has recently made significant progress and entered the construction and implementation phase.

To support the development of Shandong University’s Qingdao Campus, the Construction and Engineering Bureau of the Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Development, backed by city funding, is responsible for the Project’s construction. Upon completion, these facilities will be open to the public and serve as the three cultural landmarks of the campus.

Application of BIM technology in the construction of Shandong University Qingdao Campus

The Largest University Museum in China

Business Card One: The museum project covers approximately 40,800 square meters, making it the largest university museum in China by area. Its architectural design is inspired by the ancient Chinese character “Ding,” symbolizing a tripod that connects past and present, reflecting the museum’s deep cultural significance. The facility primarily consists of collection warehouses and exhibition halls.

This museum will address the current shortage of proper storage for archaeological finds from nearby mountains. It is anticipated to house up to 40,000 cultural relics and attract around 40,000 to 50,000 visitors annually.

A Free and Open Modern Library

Business Card Two: The library spans approximately 81,600 square meters and is designed as a free, accessible, modern facility serving students, faculty, and the surrounding community. Its design incorporates elements of European classical architecture and is situated at the heart of the campus, making it a prominent landmark.

Once completed, the library will house a collection of 3 million books, offer 6,000 reading seats, accommodate 3,000 network nodes, and have a daily capacity for 10,000 visitors.

A Multifunctional Sports Center

Business Card Three: The multifunctional comprehensive sports center covers around 80,000 square meters and will include a stadium seating 20,000 people and a sports center accommodating 8,000. This venue integrates sports education, national fitness programs, club events, and more.

As a key public facility open to all citizens, its design carefully considers vehicle traffic and crowd evacuation. The coordinated layout of the main building and surrounding plaza effectively reduces traffic congestion during major events.

The Project has received significant attention from municipal leaders. With strong cooperation from Shandong University and various departments, the Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Development’s leadership closely coordinates on-site progress. The Construction and Engineering Bureau has implemented several measures to ensure efficient execution:

  • Optimizing design through expert reviews and collaboration among participating units, including a joint review system for key design phases such as construction drawings and foundation pits. BIM technology is employed to simulate pipeline collisions, greatly enhancing design feasibility.
  • Strict quality and safety controls via dedicated project teams, improved regulations, and safe construction practices, establishing a comprehensive quality and safety management system. Responsibilities are clearly assigned across roles to ensure reliable project protection.
  • Adhering to green building standards by actively promoting environmental sustainability. Technologies such as ground source heat pumps, reclaimed water recycling, and solar energy are widely applied to ensure the Project becomes a truly green initiative.

Currently, the museum and library are in the foundation pit construction stage, with completion expected by the end of 2016. The sports center’s preliminary design is nearly finished, and construction is scheduled to begin within the year.
