Discover the World's Tallest and Most Interactive Castle at Shanghai Disney

The world’s tallest Disney castle stands proudly at the heart of Shanghai Disneyland, featuring eight auspicious towers and golden peonies blooming atop their peaks. This enchanting fairy tale castle has recently been successfully topped out, becoming the park’s iconic centerpiece. What unique design elements make this the tallest and most interactive Disney castle in the world? Yesterday, a reporter visited the amusement park construction site to explore and interview two Walt Disney Imagineers responsible for its creativity and design.

Immersive Design Brings a Real Castle to Life

At the construction site, amidst layers of scaffolding, the castle’s light brown exterior walls have started to emerge. Its vibrant blue tower tops and two striking golden spires draw immediate attention.

Given its complex functionality, building this castle involves advanced technology. Lu Yali, Executive Producer and Creative Director of Shanghai Disney Resort’s Fantasy Fairy Tale Castle, explained that from the innovative use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Immersive Digital Simulation Showroom (DISH) technology during the design phase, to the themed decoration during construction, cutting-edge technology and creativity have been fully integrated into every step.

“Visitors’ walking experience and their desire to linger can only truly be understood once the castle is built,” Lu said. “However, using DISH technology, we simulate the completed environment. Engineers wear special glasses to immerse themselves in a realistic 3D scene, allowing them to enhance the visitor experience and manage crowd flow through design improvements.”

Nearby, a life-size 1:1 scale model of the castle stands. Originally created for construction workers to practice carving, painting, and other craftsmanship, this “Castle School” helps master the building’s intricate details. Lu Yali added, “While architectural design can be completed digitally, these concepts must be realized in reality. This model allows us to finalize various design aspects, including color schemes.” On-site, workers continuously experiment with exterior wall colors on drawing boards to achieve the perfect effect.

The Golden Spire Reflects Unique Chinese Elements

Lu Yali noted that the Shanghai Disneyland Castle’s design draws inspiration from multiple sources, blending classic Disney storytelling with the elegance of European castles and traditional Chinese cultural elements, making it a truly unique Disney castle.

Mibo, originally from Taiyuan, Shanxi, is the creative designer at Walt Disney Imagineering and the artistic director of the Fantasy Fairy Tale Castle at Shanghai Disney Resort. She is responsible for designing the castle’s tower tops, architectural decorations, restaurant murals, and more.

According to Mibo, the Fantasy Fairy Tale Castle has a total of eight towers, with the design of each tower top taking several months. The tallest tower is crowned with a golden peony. The design of the largest tower’s golden spire is especially intricate:

  • The base layer features four elliptical shapes, decorated with reliefs of auspicious clouds and peonies, traditional Chinese motifs.
  • The second layer is a sphere shaped like a lotus flower.
  • The third layer displays a white magnolia pattern, symbolizing Shanghai.
  • The fourth layer includes a side symbolizing “ls,” welcoming visitors from all directions.
  • The flag at the top is adorned with an elegant lotus flower design.
  • The spire’s pinnacle features the Disney Crown held by auspicious clouds, representing the twelve Disney princesses.

Unlike other Disney castles worldwide, which are named after a single princess, the Shanghai Disneyland Castle is called the Fantasy Fairy Tale Castle because it serves as the home to all Disney princesses.

Emerging Attractions Within the Castle

Lu Yali also revealed new details about the castle’s interior. At its center will be a breathtaking, winding staircase guiding visitors through different parts of the castle, creating the sensation of traveling through a “Fairy Tale Time Tunnel.”

“Inside the castle, guests will meet classic Disney characters, including the princesses,” she explained. “Young girls can enjoy hair, makeup, and dress-up experiences, transforming into beloved princesses like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. For those who need a break, there will be a restaurant offering delicious meals.”

In addition to entertainment and dining, the castle will feature a large stage integrated into its entrance, perfect for exciting performances set against the castle backdrop and fireworks displays. This stage will serve as the grand finale for the park’s shipborne amusement attractions.

At the castle’s base lies a secret room where colorful fountains dance in a sparkling pool, immersing visitors in magical music and vibrant scenery.

Shanghai Disneyland’s Exciting Future

Scheduled to open next spring, Shanghai Disneyland is now in full construction mode. Besides the capped Fantasy Fairy Tale Castle, many attractions are already taking shape. Near the castle, the bow of a pirate ship appears ready to sail—or sink. A lively pirate figure waves from the high flagpole.

This area will be the world’s first pirate-themed zone in any Disney park, called “Treasure Bay.” Its high-tech shipborne attraction, “Pirates of the Caribbean—The Battle of Fallen Treasures,” is inspired directly by characters and scenes from the movies.

From inside the castle, visitors can also glimpse Disneytown, a comprehensive shopping, dining, and entertainment district. The Walt Disney Grand Theatre, which will host the world’s first Chinese-language production of the musical The Lion King, stands prominently as part of this vibrant area.
