According to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd., significant progress has been made on the Hongmei South Road Tunnel, the longest and deepest tunnel beneath the Huangpu River. The shield machine, which started from the Minhang working well, has successfully crossed under the Huangpu River and smoothly entered the tunnel at the Fengxian working well. With the completion of double-track excavation, the Hongmei South Road Tunnel has now achieved structural connectivity and is expected to open for traffic by the end of this year.
The Hongmei South Road Tunnel is a key project in the city’s Twelfth Five-Year Plan and represents the first major infrastructure endeavor during this period. Designed as a double-tube, single-layer, two-way highway tunnel with six lanes and a speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour, it stands as the longest and deepest highway tunnel under the Huangpu River. Once completed, the tunnel will connect Fengxian Binhai, Nanqiao New City, Minhang New City, and Zizhu Science Park, seamlessly linking Fengxian with the Central Ring Road. This connection will ease traffic congestion on the S4 Highway, Xinzhuang Interchange, and Shanghai Minhang Elevated Road, providing a vital transportation lifeline for southern Shanghai.
Throughout the construction of the Hongmei South Road Tunnel, innovative methods and techniques have been implemented. Building on monitoring systems used in previous large-scale river-crossing tunnel projects, the construction team established an integrated data collection system that supports numerical prediction and decision-making processes. The engineering control center now combines multiple functions and incorporates advanced technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), a data analysis laboratory, a fully digital management system, and a collaborative management platform based on web technology.
