Stage Design at the Hungarian National Opera House

ArchiCAD’s applications extend beyond the construction industry, constantly inspiring creativity among its users. Even seemingly unrelated fields, such as stage and set design for theaters, can benefit from architectural tools. Compared to uses like warehousing logistics or crime scene reconstruction, these examples highlight the diverse possibilities ArchiCAD offers.

This year, the Hungarian National Opera House embraced a new wave of modernization in stage design, evaluating ArchiCAD throughout the summer. This decision was a natural choice for the builders and users who had previously contributed to the opera house project.

Two productions, Swan Lake and Sharpshooter, were designed simultaneously. This collaborative effort involved two architecture students and the opera’s artistic director working closely together, including the modeling and measurement of both the auditorium and backstage areas. Throughout the project, process information was shared using BIMX and other graphic software tools, allowing for smooth communication among the board of directors. Initial tests suggest that the fundamental assembly and combination diagrams have been successfully completed.

In recent weeks, my primary focus has been on completing art direction demonstrations. These sessions revealed how a BIM workflow can significantly enhance the efficiency of stage design. Many professionals contribute to the process—not just builders, but also decorators, fashion designers, choreographers, and lighting technicians. They quickly recognized the substantial advantages that 3D modeling offers over traditional 2D sketches.

One of the greatest benefits is improved coordination and simplification. Remote model sharing during off-seasons replaces the need for in-person meetings, while allowing for more accurate scheduling and timing of assembly tasks.

Questions that might seem unrelated to BIM, such as seating layout preferences—front versus rear seats, or the number of rows behind the upper theater boxes—can also be effectively resolved through the model.

It was no surprise when ArchiCAD became an indispensable part of the Hungarian State Opera’s team.
