Inside the Challenges of Building the Chow Tai Fook Financial Center, One of the Tallest Skyscrapers

The most difficult super tall building: the main construction of Chow Tai Fook Financial Center

Yesterday, a reporter learned from the Tianjin Chow Tai Fook Financial Center project, managed by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division, that the new landmark of Binhai New Area has reached a significant milestone. The foundation pit construction of the podium has been completed, and the pouring of the bottom slab is currently underway. Meanwhile, the foundation pit excavation for the 530-meter tower is nearing completion, officially marking the start of the main structural work.

Due to its unique architectural design, the Chow Tai Fook Center is considered one of the most challenging super-tall buildings currently under construction in China.

“Although the Tianjin Chow Tai Fook Financial Center is not the tallest building under construction in China, it is undoubtedly the most difficult to build,” said Liu Peng, the deputy project manager. “Standing at 530 meters with 100 stories, the tower’s steel structure spirals irregularly upward, making it one of the toughest projects in China and ranking among the top three worldwide in terms of construction complexity.”

He added that the building’s distinct sculptural and three-dimensional architectural style presents numerous technical and engineering challenges at nearly every stage of construction.

Upon entering the construction site, the most striking feature is the enormous foundation pit, surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of cement piles. Currently, the foundation pit for the podium is complete, and excavation for the tower foundation pit is almost finished.

A representative from China Construction Eighth Engineering Division explained, “For typical super high-rise buildings, foundation pits usually reach depths of around 20 meters. However, the foundation pit for the Chow Tai Fook Financial Center tower extends to 32 meters. The soil in this development zone is soft, which complicates excavation and requires extensive reinforcement. The difficulty increases with every additional meter excavated.”

“To ensure the successful and timely completion of this new coastal landmark, China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau assembled an elite project management team of over 130 experts early on. They also invited academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and top domestic specialists to review and verify critical construction plans and technologies,” the representative added.

The project will also utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. By integrating various relevant construction data, BIM enables digital simulations of the building in real-time, enhancing construction efficiency and ensuring precise coordination throughout the project.

Once completed, the Tianjin Chow Tai Fook Financial Center will serve as a comprehensive mixed-use complex, combining retail, office space, residential units, hotel accommodations, and dining options.

The podium will house a shopping mall, while the lower 36 floors will be designated as Grade A office space. Floors 37 to 83 will contain high-end serviced apartments and super five-star hotels, and the top floors will feature a sky-view restaurant.

This development will become a major commercial hub in the core business district of Binhai New Area, playing a vital role in boosting regional tourism and enhancing the area’s international profile.
