Integrating Virtual Reality Technology into Conceptual Design

One of the most significant international trends in
conceptual design
today is the Storytelling Scenario Prophecy Method. This approach places the product under development within a specific scenario involving a person, time, place, event, or object. Through observation, prediction, imagination, and scenario analysis, designers use storybook-style graphic design to bring the product to life from the very beginning of the design process, injecting it with new vitality.

In the information age, design expression has become increasingly diverse. The application of virtual reality technology has greatly enriched design concepts and their presentation. Virtual reality offers intuitive, friendly, and interactive experiences, significantly reducing market launch risks compared to traditional products. It also provides business leaders with stronger tools to identify opportunities and decide whether conceptual products are suitable for further development and production.

1. Virtual Reality and Virtual Reality Technology

(1) Virtual Reality (VR),
VR
and
Virtual Design
(VD)

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulated environment where users experience “immersion” through various sensing devices. This technology enables direct, natural interaction within digital environments using computer-generated, colored, three-dimensional graphics that can either mirror real-life or be entirely fictional. Sensing devices such as 3D helmets, data gloves, smart clothing, and environmental sensors allow users to manipulate objects naturally and receive real-time, three-dimensional feedback. VR is a new human-computer interaction system that simulates senses such as hearing, vision, smell, and touch, providing a profound sense of immersion and allowing users to interact naturally within computer-generated settings.

Virtual Design
is a design methodology rooted in virtual reality technology, mainly for mechanical products. Designers employ multiple sensors to interact with multidimensional information, achieving both sensory and logical understanding through integrated qualitative and quantitative data. This process deepens concepts and sparks innovative ideas.

(2) Virtual Reality Technology

Virtual reality technology combines human imagination with electronics. By using multimedia computer simulation, it creates unique environments in which users interact naturally via various sensory systems, experiencing richer sensations than are possible in the real world.

2. Definition and Scope of Conceptual Design

Pahl and Beitz, in their book “Engineering Design,” define conceptual design as the stage following task definition. This stage involves abstracting and structuring functions, selecting appropriate principles and actions, determining basic solution paths, and formulating design plans. This entire process constitutes conceptual design.

Chinese scholars have also contributed to conceptual design research. For example, Deng Jiafan, in his book “Product Conceptual Design,” describes it as “a series of orderly, organized, and purposeful design activities, from analyzing user needs to generating conceptual products.” The process evolves from coarse to fine, from fuzzy to clear, and from abstract to concrete.

Over the past decades, research into conceptual design has expanded and deepened, making its scope broader and more profound. This is evident in market demand analysis, functional analysis, working principles, conceptual actions, carrier selection, and solution composition for each stage of the product lifecycle. Ultimately, determining a solution is the main goal of conceptual design, and fulfilling the entire product lifecycle is essential. By integrating multiple methods, designers strive for the optimal comprehensive solution while fostering creativity.

Conceptual design is the stage where designers envision a product or component to capture its essential form. At this point, the shape and precise dimensions are undetermined, giving designers freedom to modify and explore alternatives. The goal is to select the design scheme with the lowest production cost and highest creativity.

Traditional computer-aided design (CAD) systems are often limited to two-dimensional interactive tools, lacking three-dimensional or multidimensional capabilities. Because products are inherently three-dimensional, this limitation results in inefficient human-computer interaction. Current CAD systems require precise part dimensions, but these may not be available or necessary during conceptual design, impacting efficiency and workflow. Traditionally, product designers and CAD operators must collaborate, exchanging ideas through sketches or verbal communication, which can lead to information loss or misinterpretation. When designers directly participate in CAD modeling, the complexity of the system may distract and restrict their creativity.

To overcome these obstacles and unleash creativity, virtual reality technology is being incorporated into CAD systems for conceptual design. By leveraging VR’s rich and intuitive interactivity, designers can work in virtual environments, saving time on product descriptions and dimension definitions. This is referred to as computer-aided conceptual design based on virtual reality technology, or virtual conceptual design.

3. Research Directions and Application Prospects of Virtual Conceptual Design

(1) Two Key Issues in Conceptual Design

1. Conceptual Visualization in Virtual Reality: Designers translate market needs into tangible forms using visualizations or models. The effectiveness of conceptual design depends on whether it meets the needs of target users—”seeing is believing.” The appearance or the model is the most convincing aspect.

2. Human-Computer Interaction Interface in Virtual Reality: Effective human-computer interaction requires solving technical challenges to create harmonious environments. Virtual reality provides immersive, interactive settings based on computable information, integrating realistic audio, visual, and tactile experiences. Specialized equipment helps users interact naturally with virtual objects, producing experiences equivalent to real-world interactions.

(2) The Future of Virtual Reality Technology in Conceptual Design

Conceptual product design in virtual reality environments is a fundamental application of VR technology. Computer-generated virtual reality provides outstanding visualization, allowing interactive modifications to 3D CAD models in terms of geometry, functionality, processing, and assembly. VR delivers sensory and interactive experiences—audio, visual, and tactile—maximizing convenience and reducing cognitive load, thereby improving system efficiency. Stakeholders can evaluate prototypes for visual effects and component proportions. Users can modify models in various virtual environments, select product parts, and observe the design and modification process according to their preferences and needs.

As competition in the product market intensifies, computer-aided conceptual design based on virtual reality technology is expected to develop rapidly and ultimately integrate seamlessly with current CAD systems.
