How to Set the View Orientation of Legend Components in Revit
In Revit, when creating legend views for components, you can define the view direction directly from the legend component’s properties panel. For example, walls can display floor plans and sections, while some loaded components offer five different elevation options: front (front view), back (rear view), left, right, and floor plan (top view). Below, we’ll explain how to display three different views of a component within a legend.
First, load two families into your project: a water pump and a screw chiller. Then, navigate to the ribbon and select View → Legend. Choose Legend again to open the New Legend View dialog box, where you can set the legend view name and scale as shown in the example below.
Next, in the Project Browser under the mechanical and electrical equipment category, drag the water pump family into the legend view and click to place it. The view direction in the properties panel will default to the floor plan, which corresponds to the top view, as demonstrated in the figure.
Then, select the water pump family and go to the Modify tab. Using the appropriate tool, select the same water pump family again, and in the properties panel, change the view direction to Facade: Left, which represents the left elevation view, as illustrated below.
Repeat these steps to place the front, left, and top views of both the water pump and the screw chiller families into the legend view, as shown in the accompanying image.
Finally, use the Annotation tools to draw a table with the detail line tool, and add explanatory text for the legend. Adjust the text, symbols, and table layout to create a clear and polished presentation, as depicted in the figure.
Summary: By following the steps above, you will learn how to create three different views of a component within a legend. In real-world engineering projects, when detailed drawings or multiple views are required, you can efficiently achieve this by creating legend views, placing components, selecting various view orientations, and organizing annotations appropriately.
