How to Control Family File Size During the Family Creation Process in Revit
The size of family files directly impacts the overall project file size and the software’s performance. So, how can you minimize family file size while still meeting project requirements?
Method 1: Clear Unused Items
After finishing your family creation, remove any externally loaded families or redundant data not used in the file. To do this, go to the Manage tab, open the dropdown, and select the Clear Unused Items command.
In the pop-up dialog, delete all unnecessary items to reduce file size.
Method 2: Delete Imported CAD Drawings
If you have imported CAD drawings or raster images into your family file, it’s best to delete these elements when possible. Alternatively, consider linking CAD files instead of importing them.
To remove raster images, use the Manage Images command found under the Manage tab and delete any unneeded images.
Next, open the View tab and select Visibility/Graphics (shortcut key: VV). Locate the Imported Categories section and delete any unnecessary CAD drawings.
Method 3: Save the Project with a Different Name
When saving family files, avoid simply clicking Save if the file path is already set. Instead, use Save As to rename the file or change the save location. This forces the software to recompile the file database, which can help reduce file size.
Method 4: Geometric Shape Creation Techniques
To optimize file size, consider the following practices:
- Minimize the use of hollow geometric shapes and avoid arrays and complex formulas whenever possible.
- Use symbolic lines and masking regions in plan views instead of model lines or other geometry.
- Select an appropriate family template for your drawing. Since templates carry inherent memory, choosing the right one can affect file size. For example, rename a family file from
stair family.rfatostair family.rftto save it as a custom family template.
