Prefabricated Construction: The Foundation of Smart Cities Through Intelligent Buildings

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, November 17th (Reporter Rong Qihan) — “Smart cities require buildings to be data-enabled, and the construction process to be data-driven,” said Ye Haowen, Deputy Chief Engineer of China State Construction Engineering Corporation. Smart buildings are a crucial foundation for smart cities, and their development should begin with smart construction.

At the 6th China-Italy Innovation Cooperation Week Sustainable Development and Smart City Forum, which opened on November 17th, over ten industry experts from China and Italy gathered to discuss the green and smart transformation of urban construction. This forward-thinking concept highlights the deep integration and innovative collaboration between the construction industry and fields such as energy conservation, environmental protection, technology, and information sectors.

Ye Haowen explained that many countries are currently developing Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. BIM enables intelligence throughout the construction phase by managing data and information flows collaboratively, and it collects construction data via simulation models for later use by operators.

Professor Cheng Dazhang from Tongji University noted that by 2014, China’s urbanization rate reached 54.77%. The new urbanization plan emphasizes three key aspects: green, smart, and human-centered development. Smart cities penetrate every sector to promote ecological urban growth. He also emphasized that cities should base their development strategies on factors such as historical geography, economic capacity, and industrial structure, reflecting the wisdom of urban planning.

“We need to present the future spatial vision of living to the public, much like showcasing a ‘concept car’,” Ye Haowen said. The “China Construction Future Building,” developed by China Construction Technology, is scheduled to begin construction next year. This project will integrate research achievements with technologies such as green building, passive design, and ultra-low energy consumption to serve as a showcase.

Marco Giuli, President of Politecnico di Torino in Italy, highlighted the close relationship between technology and smart cities. He noted that urban management generates vast amounts of information daily. The challenge lies in smartly collecting and managing this data, a challenge that all countries will face as they develop smart cities. This presents a promising area for cooperation between China and Italy.

The “China-Italy Innovation Cooperation Week” is jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and Italy’s Research Department of the University of Education. Established in 2010, the event is held annually, alternating between China and Italy. This year, 135 institutions from Italy and over 200 representatives from Chinese institutions participated, engaging in more than 510 project matchmaking sessions and aiming to establish over 150 cooperation agreements.
