How to Create Eaves in Revit
When designing a roof in Revit, you can create eaves by specifying the overhang value. Once the roof drawing is complete, you have the option to align the eaves and adjust their cross-section and height.
Modifying the Cross-Section of the Eaves
After the roof is created, you can change the eaves’ style by selecting a specific beam section.
Start by selecting the roof in the drawing area.
In the Attributes palette, choose one of the following for the rafters’ cross-section:
- Vertical Section
- Vertical Double Section
- Square Double Section with 2 sides
For the Vertical Double Section or Square Double Section, specify the Depth of the Fascia as a value between zero and the roof thickness.
Aligning the Eaves
The Align the Eaves tool allows you to adjust and synchronize the eave heights along different roof boundary lines.
- While in sketch mode, go to Modify | Roof > Edit Trace tab > Tools panel, and select Align with Eaves.
- Dimensions will appear near the eaves, indicating their current height.
- Select the roof eave line, then choose from the following options to adjust the eave properties:
- Adjust Height: Change the slab height relative to the roof reference or by an offset value.
- Adjust Overhang: Modify the eaves height by changing the suspension value.
- Select the eaves with the desired overhang and height.
- Then select other eaves that need to match the first eaves’ overhang and height.
Note: If the eaves lines were created with drawing tools, only Adjust Height will be available.
After making the adjustments, click the checkmark (✔) to complete editing mode.
You can then review the updated roof overhangs on your model.
Changing the Height of the Eaves
Once the roof is created, you can further adjust the eaves’ height:
- Select the slope to define boundary lines in sketch mode.
- In the Attributes palette, specify the Offset from Roof Reference or the Offset of the Board from the Reference Point value.
- Click the checkmark (✔) to complete editing mode.
Eave Banding
You can add fascia to the edges of roofs, eaves, and other architectural features. Fascia can be added to model lines as well. Placement can be done in 2D views—such as plan or section—or in a 3D view.
Adding Eaves Banding
Use the Fascia tool to add trim to roof edges, eaves slabs, model lines, and other fascia elements.
Navigate to the Architecture tab → Build panel → Roof dropdown → select Fascia.
Highlight the edges of the roof, soffit, other fascia, or model lines where you want to place fascia, then click to apply. The status bar will provide information about valid reference points.
When you click an edge, Revit treats it as continuous fascia. If fascia segments meet at corners, they will be connected diagonally.
To reposition fascia, go to Modify | Place Fascia tab → Place panel, and click to complete the current fascia and start placing others.
Move your cursor to new edges and click to place additional fascia. Note that fascia segments placed separately will not intersect diagonally, even if they meet at corners.
Click in a blank area of the view to finish placing fascia on the roof.
