What to Do When There Are No Insertion Points in a Loaded Revit Family Project
What if the family you loaded into your Revit project has no insertion points? You might find that using the align command to select a reference line on the floor plan doesn’t work, and no matter how you place the family, it never positions correctly on the plane. This can create a lot of extra work and frustration. You might even feel like smashing your computer or going on strike! Don’t worry—today, I’ll share two solutions to this issue, using a hollow family based on a surface metric conventional model as an example.
Solution 1: Typically, when you create a family, the family template includes two default reference planes. If these two reference planes haven’t been set properly, the insertion point for the loaded family will default to the intersection of those two planes.
But what if you want the insertion point to be somewhere else? For example, suppose you want to use the lower right corner of a rectangular hollow tensile component as the insertion point instead of the center of the two reference planes. Here’s what to do:
First, select the two default reference planes. Then, on the properties bar, locate the option labeled Define Origin and uncheck it.
Once you’ve unchecked Define Origin, you can create new reference planes at the desired insertion point. For instance, if you want the bottom right corner of the rectangular hollow component as the insertion point, create two reference planes intersecting at that corner.
After you’ve created these new reference planes, select them both, and this time check the Define Origin option on the properties bar. This will set the intersection of these new planes as the insertion point for the loaded family.
Solution 2: Use the Model Line tool.
Click on Model Line and draw a shape around your rectangular hollow component. In this example, I draw a circle surrounding the component and then lock it in place.
The reason for drawing a circle is to help with quick positioning and placement within your project.
