Creating Indicators and Detailed Schedules in Revit: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Generate Indicators and Detailed Lists in Revit

When working on a project, it’s often necessary to add indicator parameters to each component (family), including code, name, size, material, weight, and more. So, how do you create such a detailed list with a header?

First, prepare each component according to the drawings. Then, create a new project and load each component separately for assembly. I prefer to assemble the family first and then create the detailed list, based on my personal workflow.

After completing the assembly, go to the View tab in the Revit menu bar. Locate the Schedule option, and in the New Schedule window, click OK without changing any other parameters.

Next, add the relevant parameters based on your needs, selecting either text or standard model types. At this stage, a detailed list will be generated, but it might not meet your expectations and will require manual editing.

To start, edit the header and blank spaces similar to how you would in Excel—merge and insert cells as needed to format the header properly. Then, switch to the 3D view and enter the corresponding names or other parameters in the properties panel. The detailed list will update accordingly, displaying each item one by one.

One common issue is the appearance of a blank space before the table. To fix this, go to the Appearance settings on the left and click Edit After. Find the blank line before the data in the window and uncheck it. This removes the unwanted blank line.

Another issue is that the list may not be sorted correctly. To resolve this, select the sequence number as the sorting method under the Sorting/Grouping section on the left. This is crucial. Also, make sure to uncheck the option to list each instance separately; otherwise, Revit will generate a detailed list for each individual part.

Finally, the completed detailed list will be generated as shown in the figure.
