As the National BIM Level Examination approaches, many young professionals are eager to learn more about the BIM Certificate and the growing number of exam questions. Today, the author from BIM Architecture Network will briefly discuss:
Is it easy to obtain the BIM Level 1 certificate? Can it be affiliated?
First, it’s important to note that China offers many types of BIM certificates. These include certificates issued by training companies, as well as those from professional organizations and associations. For a detailed overview, please refer to the author’s previous article:
One article tells you the types of BIM certificates in China.
Here, we will focus specifically on the BIM Level 1 certificate issued by the Chinese Society of Graphic Design and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
1. Exam Content
The exam is divided into five main sections:
- Part 1: Engineering Drawing and BIM Modeling Environment Settings
- Part 2: BIM Parametric Modeling
- Part 3: BIM Attribute Definition and Editing
- Part 4: Creating Drawings
- Part 5: Model File Management
The key focus of the exam is Part 2: BIM Parametric Modeling. This section covers defining basic model elements, creating these elements and their types, and handling fundamental architectural forms. Candidates will be tested on essential building components such as walls, columns, doors and windows, roofs, floors, ceilings, and stairs. The complexity of these elements reflects the overall challenge of the exam.
2. Can I Apply for a BIM Level 1 Certificate?
Regarding this question, the author has previously discussed Can BIM certificates be linked to earn money in detail. Briefly, the BIM Level 1 certificate serves as an entry-level proof of BIM modeling competency. Its recognition is not very strong, and currently, there is no known affiliation system connected with it. However, some companies do offer higher salaries to employees who hold BIM Level 1 or higher certificates.
3. How Difficult Is the Exam?
Based on the author’s experience, the exam has a moderate difficulty level but includes a large number of questions. Completing all questions within the 3-hour time limit can be challenging, even for skilled and experienced candidates. Since the exam is for certification, achieving a passing score of 60 is sufficient for lifetime validity.
The key to passing is focusing on the critical parts of the exam. Specifically, BIM parametric modeling (Part 2) carries the most weight, accounting for 50 points of the total score. Candidates should prioritize this section to maximize their chances of success.
4. Exam Tips
While basic exam requirements like bringing an ID card and following exam room rules are standard, here are some additional tips:
- Prepare thoroughly before the exam. Practice and training are essential to pass.
- Stay calm during the exam. Three hours is enough time to achieve a passing score. If you get stuck on a question, consider moving on to avoid wasting valuable time.
- Results typically take 3 to 5 months (calendar months) to be issued, so don’t rush after the exam. Use the time to focus on other important tasks.
