How to Customize Your Own Shortcut Keys in Revit
Revit software offers a feature to customize drawing tool shortcuts (available from Revit 2011 onwards). There are two ways to open the shortcut customization window:
- Click the top-left corner of the Revit window to open the Options dialog box. Then, switch to the User Interface tab and click the Shortcut Keys button to access the shortcut key settings.
- Alternatively, go to View > User Interface > Shortcuts to open the Shortcut Definition dialog box.
It’s important to note that Revit shortcuts work differently from AutoCAD shortcuts. While AutoCAD shortcuts are usually single letters—the first letter of a command—Revit shortcuts are limited to two letters. Also, in AutoCAD, both the Enter and Spacebar keys can repeat the previous command. In Revit, only the Enter key can repeat the last command; the Spacebar does not serve this function.
Here’s an example of how to customize shortcuts in Revit:
If you want to assign a shortcut key for the Align command, start by opening the Customize Shortcut Keys dialog box. Assuming you already know the Align button is located under the Modify menu, limit your search scope to Modify. In the search bar, type Align to find the command you want to edit.
You will see that the default shortcut for the Align command is AL, which corresponds to the first two letters of “Align”. To change it to AA, enter AA in the New Shortcut input field and click Assign.
After completing this step, you can use AA as a shortcut for the Align command. Note that custom shortcuts do not overwrite Revit’s default shortcuts, so both AL and AA will trigger the Align command.
