How to Directly Weld Branch Pipes and Air Vents onto Air Ducts in Revit
In some construction scenarios, branch air ducts need to be directly welded to the main air duct without using any fittings. By default, Revit requires branch ducts to connect to the main duct through connectors. However, designers sometimes prefer to install air outlets directly on the duct, rather than at the end of a branch duct.
We can maintain the integrity of the duct system and ensure calculation functions are unaffected by editing the duct joints. This approach simulates a welded connection, reduces interface length, and achieves the desired effect.
Follow these steps:
- Load the Rectangular Connector editing family into your project file.
- Open the Family Types dialog box. Locate the parameters Fixed length of output port and Output port length, then set these values to a very small number (e.g., 1mm). Click OK to confirm. Modify the family accordingly, load it back into the project, and overwrite the existing version.
- Use the Duct command to select the desired duct type, then click Edit Type to open the type properties.
- Click Set up system configuration on the right side, then click the Edit button. In the dialog box, confirm that the Preferred Connection Type is set to Connector. Proceed by selecting the modified connector family file created in the previous steps, then click OK to complete the editing process. (Refer to the image below)
Similarly, air outlets can be installed directly on the air duct as well. (See the image below)
