“Building Information Modeling” (BIM) is widely recognized as a technology, methodology, or process that leverages digital tools to represent the geometric, physical, and functional details of construction projects. This approach facilitates informed decision-making throughout the entire project lifecycle—from construction to operation and management.
The software that enables BIM technology is known as “BIM software,” while the digital representation produced through BIM is referred to as a “BIM model.”
To better understand BIM, it helps to compare it with the well-known concepts of CAD technology. The relationships can be summarized as follows:
| Technology, Methods, and Processes | Software Tools | Work Outputs |
| BIM | Name: BIM Software Examples: Revit, Bentley Architecture, ArchiCAD |
Name: BIM Model Examples: RVT, DGN, PLN |
| CAD | Name: CAD Software Examples: AutoCAD, Microstation |
Name: Graphics (Files) Examples: DWG, DGN |
For many professionals in the construction industry, BIM remains a relatively new technology and methodology. Even before BIM’s introduction and widespread adoption, the industry had embraced various digital tools and approaches such as CAD, visualization, parametric CAE, GIS, collaborative BLM, IPD, VDC, lean construction, process optimization, gaming, the Internet, mobile communications, and RFID.
Many wonder how these technologies relate to BIM and how BIM integrates with them to enhance industrial advancements in construction. These topics are broad and complex, making it challenging for any individual to provide a comprehensive explanation. Nonetheless, professionals inevitably face these questions as they apply BIM in their daily work.
For instance, I am often asked, “What distinguishes animations created with BIM from those made with 3ds Max?” Such questions underscore the need for a deeper understanding. Here, I would like to share my own insights and perspectives while welcoming feedback, corrections, and support from fellow professionals.
