Creating Strip Families in Revit: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Create Strip Families in Revit

Revit’s default light source cannot produce a strip lighting effect. Even when selecting a long glowing shape, the rendered result will still resemble the dispersion of a point light source.

Follow these steps to create a strip light family:

1. First, create a new family based on lines. Start by making a simple rectangular model using lines.

2. Change the family category to Lighting Fixtures, and lock the geometry to the reference line.

3. After locking and completing the model, adjust the detail level settings. Stretch the graphic elements to display only at the “General/Medium” detail level, and make them invisible at lower detail levels. (When drawing ceilings, this ensures only a single line is visible. Setting the line style to invisible helps depict the light strip correctly on drawings.)

4. Assign material parameters to the stretched elements. Create a new material within the project and enable the glow option.

5. The rendering effect will appear as shown in the following figure.
