Project Background:
The Chengdu High-tech Cultural Center is situated in the Dayuan Cluster of the South High-tech Zone. It is bordered by Tianfu Fourth Street to the south, Shenghua South Road to the east, a planned municipal road to the north, and a planned urban green park to the west.
This project encompasses multiple facilities: a library, a planning center, a cultural center, a multifunctional activity center, and a service center dedicated to young workers and women. The goal is to establish a modern, comprehensive cultural hub that integrates various functional buildings.
BIM Project Overview:
The project is managed by China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., serving as the EPC contractor. Xu Hui, the Vice President of the institute, personally leads the BIM technology efforts to provide strong EPC management support.
The project management team includes Project Manager Zhang Yu, BIM Leader Wang Wei, and Fang Mingyang. They collaborate closely with the Southwest Branch of China Construction Second Engineering Bureau and the supervising unit, Chengdu Hengtai Engineering Management Co., Ltd. From the project’s outset, all parties agreed to actively cooperate and leverage BIM technology to establish a first-class construction site with outstanding quality, aiming to set a benchmark as the premier BIM demonstration project in Sichuan.
During the conceptual phase, BIM technology was employed to fully realize the design vision.

1. Exploring Culture-Centered Design:
Located outside old Chengdu, the high-tech zone is characterized by modern, high-tech materials. However, the area’s large-scale blocks and lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure create a distance from the leisurely lifestyle Chengdu is known for. This cultural center project seeks to express Chengdu’s relaxed cultural essence through innovative, modern design.
2. Commitment to Excellence:
After winning the bid, the team was not satisfied with the initial design, which lacked vitality and cultural depth. As a result, they made significant adjustments to the overall layout and design concept. Multiple revisions and thorough communication with the client, combined with detailed model production, led to a refined and effective design outcome.
3. Complex Scale and Functionality:
Given the project’s large scale and complex functions, and to coordinate with the general contractor’s bidding schedule, tighter control through a global system was essential. BIM technology facilitated the involvement of multiple disciplines—such as interior and landscape design—once the main scheme stabilized. This multidisciplinary approach enriched architectural creativity and enhanced scientific, precise quality control.
During the BIM construction drawing phase, China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute applied BIM for design verification, optimization, and comprehensive drawing management. This approach improved coordination, reduced errors, omissions, and clashes, and significantly enhanced overall design quality.
This project thoroughly explores and optimizes the application of BIM systems within EPC general contracting. Effective BIM implementation is crucial for supporting the entire EPC process management, marking a milestone for the industry as a whole.
