Grün Resort Uluwatu, nestled in Uluwatu, Bali, is a family-style luxury boutique resort that embraces a natural theme. The resort’s standout feature is its octagonal building, set within a serene environment and recognized as Stilt Studios’ most distinctive design. Departing from traditional architectural norms, this unique octagonal structure emphasizes nature’s inherent harmony, enhancing spatial efficiency while minimizing its ecological footprint.

The development of Grün Resort illustrates a deep commitment to coexisting with nature rather than dominating it. “We eagerly embraced the opportunity to create a large restaurant and public area alongside the Octagonal Building,” says Prayoga Arya, Chief Architect at Stilt Studios. “Our main goal was to design a unique space that harmonizes effortlessly with the surrounding forest environment.”

The octagonal building’s design prioritizes flexibility, capable of supporting diverse functions and adapting to evolving needs. The 140-square-meter ground floor serves as the resort’s restaurant, while the open 200-square-meter upper floor allows seamless transitions between spaces. This area can accommodate various activities, from office work to yoga classes or social gatherings. This versatility ensures the Octagonal Square remains practical and vibrant over time, fostering a sustainable living environment.

The ground floor is designed to “pilot” the structure, while the upper floor appears to float lightly above the ground. Large glass sliding doors, a circular skylight at the center, and carefully positioned openings provide expansive views of the forest and allow abundant natural light to fill the interior. The open-plan design, paired with low-profile, relaxed furniture, creates an airy, spacious atmosphere and promotes smooth, natural circulation. Together, these elements foster tranquility and a strong connection with nature.

The upper level features a spacious terrace that wraps around the entire building. Stepping onto this terrace blurs the line between indoor and outdoor living, offering breathtaking 360-degree views. Guests and visitors at Grün Resort Uluwatu can fully immerse themselves in this unique experience.

The octagonal structure showcases an elegant blend of glass, steel, and recycled wood, giving the exterior a distinct tropical yet industrial character. Steel adds a modern touch while providing durability and recyclability. Meanwhile, the use of recycled wood introduces a sense of history and authenticity, supporting sustainability by reducing the demand for new timber. Together, these materials create a visually striking and environmentally responsible architectural statement.

Aligned with Stilt Studios’ philosophy of minimizing environmental impact, the octagonal building utilizes prefabricated components and carefully sourced materials. Wood is extensively used to enhance carbon storage, while prefabrication optimizes construction efficiency and reduces waste. This approach saves time and significantly lowers the project’s carbon footprint.
