Essential Software for Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Today, Mr. Liu from BIM Architecture Network will introduce essential software tools used in BIM. Although the title may be somewhat misleading, let’s focus on the content.

1. ArchiCAD

ArchiCAD, developed by the Hungarian company Graphisoft in 1982, is the oldest and one of the most widely used BIM architectural design software tools available. It is often considered the pioneer of BIM software. ArchiCAD is an object-oriented 3D modeling tool that offers a vast library of components to support detailed modeling tasks.

Compatible with Mac OS, ArchiCAD features an intuitive interface that enhances user experience. The software has evolved over time, with the latest known version being ArchiCAD 16. Originally designed for the Apple Macintosh system, ArchiCAD was introduced as an architectural CAD system focused on object modeling.

Graphisoft has expanded ArchiCAD’s capabilities by integrating various construction-related applications. After Graphisoft was acquired by Nemetschek in 2007, many of these applications became part of Vico Software’s product suite.

ArchiCAD supports multiple user interfaces and integrates with tools like Maxon for curved surface modeling and animation, ArchiFM for facility management, and SketchUp. Additionally, it includes an ODBC interface, offering users extended access to object databases.

2. Bentley Architecture

Bentley Architecture, launched by the U.S.-based Bentley Systems in 2004, evolved from their earlier software Triforma. This BIM tool integrates multiple applications such as Bentley Structure, Bentley Building Mechanical System, Bentley Building Electrical System, Bentley Facilities, Bentley PowerCivil, and Bentley Generative Components.

Most of these applications are file-based, which means that modifications are written directly to files, minimizing memory reads. Bentley Systems also provides an integrated platform combining architecture, engineering, and construction software.

However, third-party applications may not always be compatible across platforms, requiring file conversions. Bentley supports various file formats, including DGN, DWG, DWFTM, PDF, STEP, IGES, STL, and IFC.

One of Bentley Architecture’s strengths is handling complex Bezier and NURBS surfaces while offering customized services for specialized components. It boasts fast data transmission, web-sharing capabilities, and robust intellectual property management through digital permissions and signatures.

Despite its features, Bentley’s distributed database approach results in less tight data relationships compared to software like Revit or Tekla, and its interface can be complex and challenging to master. The MicroStation platform is currently at version v8i, with continuous updates to ProjectWise.

3. Revit Architecture

Released by Autodesk in 2002, Revit Architecture and Revit MEP aim to provide BIM tools covering the entire building lifecycle. Autodesk updates the product line annually, with the latest version being 2016.

Revit is known for its user-friendly interface, simplifying the learning curve. It utilizes a single BIM model to generate views and graphics from all perspectives, offering automatic project coordination to manage drawing changes and references seamlessly.

The software supports simultaneous multi-user collaboration on the same project. Its object database facilitates concurrent use and creation by multiple users. Revit MEP incorporates point cloud technology to extract and visualize existing conditions.

Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design tools integrate directly into the model, enhancing system design, modeling capabilities, and the ability to establish pipelines and placeholders that can be refined into detailed objects.

Additionally, Revit provides panel scheduling functionality to calculate total load values and display them in schedules. Construction drawings are generated automatically with detailed plans, sections, and elevations.

4. Tekla Structures

Tekla Structures, developed by Finland’s Tekla Corp. in 2004, is a professional 3D structural modeling software that evolved from Tekla Xsteel. It excels in steel structures, precast concrete, timber, reinforced concrete, and steel engineering.

Tekla Structures maintains a comprehensive structural database that links all objects, materials, and details within the model. It offers features for structural detailing, reinforcement, and integrated construction workflows, including lifting coordination.

The software uses the physical properties of structural models for automatic collision detection and supports large-scale collaborative projects. It allows users to develop custom tools using the .NET framework, supports complex databases, and can output data for web viewing.

However, Tekla Structures has limited 3D visualization capabilities compared to some other BIM software.

5. Vectorworks

Vectorworks, developed by Nemetschek AG in Europe, focuses on CAD software for architects, engineers, and manufacturers. It was the first to showcase BIM feasibility in a cross-platform CAD environment, supporting both Windows and Mac OS.

Vectorworks uses NOI Layer technology in its BIM database, enabling third-party applications to design and analyze objects within the model. Its services cater to architects, civil engineers, and professionals in valuation and construction management.

The latest versions have improved the 3D environment and introduced new building components to enhance design capabilities.

That concludes today’s overview of essential BIM software. I hope this information proves helpful to everyone.
