In recent years, the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in enterprises has become a significant trend in the construction industry. However, many companies face challenges regarding how to effectively implement and integrate BIM into their workflows. Drawing from my own professional experience, I would like to share some practical steps enterprises can take to successfully apply BIM despite these challenges.
Step 1: Establish a BIM Center
To develop enterprise-level BIM applications, the first step is to form dedicated teams. Companies should select talented individuals from various departments to create a BIM center or specialized BIM team. This team should undergo comprehensive BIM software training in the early stages to build foundational skills.
As projects increase and experience accumulates, the enterprise can gradually expand BIM applications across the organization. The BIM center should also take on research responsibilities, exploring the company’s potential with BIM, developing tailored BIM standards and regulations, and guiding the overall direction of BIM implementation.
Step 2: Provide Specialized Training
BIM technology enables more detailed division of labor in construction projects, moving beyond a one-software-fits-all approach. Therefore, training should be specialized, targeting disciplines such as architecture, structural engineering, plumbing, electrical engineering, and computational analysis.
Enterprises need to identify and cultivate BIM experts in these specific fields. It is crucial to thoroughly assess and plan for this specialization to ensure successful BIM adoption.
Step 3: Accumulate Experience and Promote Gradually
Through hands-on project experience, BIM centers or teams develop standardized BIM workflows and models. These proven approaches can then be introduced to more projects within the enterprise, creating scalable project solutions and encouraging wider BIM adoption across departments and subsidiary units.
Step 4: Expand Influence and Promote Enterprise-Wide Applications
Once initial steps have been accomplished, the enterprise typically establishes a BIM center at its core, supported by collaboration among secondary units and departments. At this stage, it is important to devise a clear strategy and promotion plan for enterprise-wide BIM development.
Engage senior leadership by sharing case studies and demonstrating tangible benefits. Securing their buy-in is essential to drive a top-down BIM adoption process throughout the organization.
Step 5: Achieve Scale
After consistent implementation, BIM solutions can be rolled out across all enterprises within a group. By fostering active information exchange, companies can create a shared BIM database that enables sister units to share and communicate data effectively, resulting in group-level BIM applications.
These are the key steps I recommend for enterprises aiming to implement BIM based on my own company’s experience. While these insights are not universally representative, I encourage you to consider them and share how your enterprise approaches BIM integration.
