BIM has been used in China for over a decade. In recent years, with the construction industry’s increasing focus on digitalization, the promotion and development of BIM have gained significant momentum. I have personally been involved with BIM for 10 years due to my work. After years of learning and practical application, I would like to share some of my insights and experiences with BIM.
1. BIM is More Than Just New Software
For early CAD technicians, creating drawings with CAD was a straightforward and effortless skill. When BIM technology emerged, many mistakenly viewed it as simply another software tool. However, this is far from the truth. There are dozens of BIM software programs tailored for different project specializations. These tools span various disciplines and cover the entire lifecycle of construction projects, unlike traditional CAD.
Moreover, 3D design differs fundamentally from graphic design. It requires technical staff to change their drawing habits and design mindset, which involves time for training and adjustment. For example, at my company, we introduce BIM concepts to technical personnel by combining CAD references with drawing set applications, alongside multi-disciplinary design coordination. This approach helps staff quickly adapt to BIM frameworks, workflows, and develop a strong awareness and habit of BIM-based design.
2. Understanding the Core Concept of BIM
In my view, truly grasping and applying BIM concepts is crucial for both individuals and organizations to succeed in future projects. Currently, the promotion of BIM and related software in China often includes some exaggerated claims, which can cloud judgment. Nevertheless, BIM offers clear advantages such as scientific accuracy, one-time data mapping, improved precision in early budgeting, and more refined construction management.
At present, the emphasis in China tends to focus more on BIM software than on BIM itself. I believe learning BIM should begin with a solid understanding of its underlying concept. Through comprehensive BIM training, we can cultivate a more scientific and practical mindset aligned with real construction processes. Even if BIM software promotion currently overshadows the concept, starting with the fundamentals is essential. Mastering these principles allows us to explore deeper applications and unlock the broader potential BIM offers.
3. Experience Remains Irreplaceable
While BIM can automate many complex and repetitive tasks, reducing workload and streamlining processes, it cannot replace the experience and technical judgment of skilled personnel. The competence and quality of staff are ultimately determined by their knowledge and expertise, not just the tools they use.
BIM can enhance design quality, but this depends heavily on the operator’s extensive experience and capabilities. Additionally, establishing a comprehensive BIM platform demands high standards in human resources and project management, which requires long-term accumulation and development.
That concludes my practical insights on BIM application. As I am still learning and have experienced some interruptions in BIM use due to work commitments, my summary may be incomplete or somewhat distant from the latest developments.
