Over time, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in China has gradually expanded from the design phase to the construction phase. Many large construction enterprises have made significant progress in applying BIM. However, numerous companies remain uncertain about how to effectively implement BIM and lack clear strategies for its adoption. Based on my experience, I would like to share some insights on how construction companies can successfully carry out BIM applications.
1. Understand the Current Landscape
BIM represents a major trend not only for individual construction companies but for the entire construction industry. It is crucial for companies to recognize this shift early, adopt a forward-looking vision, and proactively integrate BIM into their operations. Supported by relevant government policies and the growing influence of big data in construction, companies should actively study BIM’s impact on their future development and explore how to leverage it to enhance their competitiveness. By improving BIM capabilities and adjusting enterprise strategies accordingly, companies can seamlessly incorporate BIM into their workflows. Decision-makers need to adapt their direction and implement new strategies promptly.
2. Make Necessary Financial Investments
One major challenge hindering BIM development in construction companies is the reluctance to invest due to concerns about uncertain returns. However, companies that have successfully adopted BIM understand that BIM software demands high-performance computers and related hardware, which standard systems cannot adequately support. Therefore, substantial investment is essential for practical BIM application on projects. This includes upgrading professional computers, acquiring data transmission equipment for on-site personnel, and providing mobile terminals, among other tools. Additionally, purchasing genuine BIM software is a significant investment, as it ensures full functionality and reliable upgrade services. Some software providers also offer training services to help companies build technical expertise.
3. Develop Skilled Personnel
Training BIM professionals is a critical focus area for construction companies implementing BIM. Although BIM is a relatively new concept and methodology, it depends heavily on software to realize its functions. Skilled technicians operate this software to bring BIM concepts to life. Therefore, cultivating qualified BIM talent is essential. Only with a sufficient number of trained professionals can companies scale up BIM adoption and handle more complex projects successfully.
4. Build Strong Teams
As the saying goes, a single tree cannot make a forest. In construction companies, having individual BIM experts is not enough if they are not organized into a cohesive team. Without collaboration, it is difficult to improve company efficiency. Once a BIM team is established, companies can start by applying BIM to smaller projects and gradually move towards larger, more complex ones. This approach helps accumulate valuable experience, optimize personnel allocation, enhance collaborative design capabilities, and ultimately develop a mature BIM application team capable of meeting diverse project challenges.
5. Establish BIM Standards
Rules are essential for harmony, and this principle applies strongly to BIM as well. Many domestic construction companies are still in the early stages of BIM adoption, and BIM software localization remains limited. Nevertheless, companies must continue building project experience without hesitation. By accumulating practical knowledge, creating proprietary component databases, and developing BIM enterprise standards tailored to their specific needs, companies can lay a solid and sustainable foundation for BIM implementation.
In conclusion, these are some key strategies for construction companies to promote BIM applications effectively. With ongoing national policies and support from construction authorities, BIM technology is poised for broader development in the future. Thoroughly studying BIM and actively applying it in real-world projects will greatly benefit the advancement of China’s construction industry.
