Is learning BIM beneficial for employment? This question is particularly common among students new to BIM or those seeking jobs. The author can confidently say that BIM technology has been present in China for over a decade. After years of industry experience and research, BIM is undoubtedly becoming the leading information technology trend in the domestic construction sector. Moreover, with strong governmental support, BIM industry standards and national BIM guidelines have been established across various provinces and cities, ensuring a promising future for BIM.
In the author’s view, BIM essentially functions as a comprehensive building information database. By retrieving, utilizing, and analyzing this data alongside relevant BIM tools such as software and mobile devices, it is possible to transform and manage projects holistically throughout their entire lifecycle. This enables seamless integration of vast amounts of data, aligning perfectly with the current big data trend. Building a BIM system with extensive data not only revolutionizes traditional workflows but also significantly boosts efficiency—saving nearly a hundredfold in working hours and reducing engineering costs by millions, tens, or even hundreds of millions.
Additionally, the presentation of BIM is no longer limited to simple 3D models. Through parameterization and digitization, professional 2D drawings and static 3D models are transformed into dynamic, editable digital models. Gone are the days of manually revising hundreds or thousands of drawings. Now, with just a click, all related modifications update simultaneously, drastically reducing work time and enhancing productivity. This convenient approach makes you highly valuable—so why wouldn’t companies want you?
Regarding salaries, a topic many are curious about, here is a set of images illustrating the salary and benefits of BIM professionals in Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. (For reference only)
From the figures shown, it’s clear that BIM professionals’ salaries follow a pattern similar to other careers: the more experience you have, the higher your pay. However, one distinct point is that BIM interns in these three regions have an average salary close to 4000 RMB. Honestly, for a newcomer without project experience but proficient in BIM software, earning around 4000 RMB per month is quite reasonable.
So, is learning BIM good for employment? That sums up the key points. At the same time, the author advises all students not to approach BIM superficially or mechanically. Merely mastering basic BIM modeling—the most entry-level and highly replaceable skill—is insufficient. This topic has been discussed in detail in the author’s section “What is a BIM Engineer.” To secure a desirable position and a good working environment, dedication and perseverance are essential.
